I have arthritis at the base of my thumb (CMC arthritis). Will voice typing actually help?
Yes — thumb arthritis (also called CMC or basal joint arthritis) is one of the conditions voice typing helps with most directly, because so much of typing pressure transfers through the thumb when you reach for the spacebar, hold modifier keys, or use a phone keyboard. CaringDictate removes all of that. You can leave the keyboard alone entirely and dictate into any text field on Windows.
Will it work with shaky hands as well as stiff hands?
Yes — see our dedicated guide for essential tremor and Parkinson's. Voice typing helps with both stiffness (osteoarthritis, RA) and shakiness (tremor, Parkinson's), because the voice is generally unaffected by either pattern.
I am not very good with computers. Is this hard to set up?
It takes three minutes and three questions. After you install CaringDictate (one downloaded file), the setup wizard asks: 1) what key would you like to press to start dictation, 2) should the same key stop it, 3) would you like a soft chime when dictation starts and stops. That is the whole setup. You can change any answer later from a simple settings window.
Will my children or grandchildren be able to help me install it remotely?
Yes — and we make this easy on purpose. You can email the download link to a family member, they can guide you through it on a phone call (or via Zoom or TeamViewer), and the whole installation takes under five minutes. Are the privacy claims real? My voice really doesn't go anywhere?
Yes. Voice recognition happens entirely on your computer's processor (CPU) using a downloaded model. Nothing is sent to any server, nothing is recorded, nothing is uploaded. This is different from Apple Dictation, Google Voice Typing, and Dragon Anywhere — all of which send your voice to the cloud. We chose local processing because we built CaringDictate for people whose private medical, financial, and personal conversations should stay private.
Does it work if my voice has gotten quieter or raspier with age?
Mostly yes. Whisper Large v3 Turbo (the recognition engine) was trained on a very wide range of voices, including older speakers, softer speakers, and speakers with accents. A decent USB headset microphone helps a lot — we recommend one for any user whose voice projection has changed. The 30-day refund lets you find out whether it works for your specific voice without risk.
