Microsoft acquired Nuance (Dragon's maker) for $19.7 billion in 2022 and has effectively wound down the consumer line. Dragon Home was discontinued in 2023. Dragon Professional Individual has been frozen at v16 since 2023. Dragon for Mac has not existed since 2018. The remaining Dragon products are either expensive enterprise medical software or a cloud-only mobile subscription.

The Dragon family in 2026 — what's actually for sale
Before comparing software, it helps to be clear about what you can actually buy from Nuance/Microsoft today. The Dragon brand still exists, but the catalog is significantly narrower than it was five years ago.

The 5-year cost math
The simplest way to compare. If you keep your dictation software for five years (a normal lifespan for a piece of consumer software), here is what each option costs.
- CaringDictate: $49 total. One payment.
- Dragon Professional v16: $699 total. Frozen at v16, no updates.

What about accuracy? An honest answer.
Dragon at its best — meaning trained on your voice for hours, in a quiet room, with a high-end headset microphone — has historically been the gold standard for dictation accuracy. We are not going to pretend otherwise.
What has changed: Whisper Large v3 Turbo, released in 2024 by OpenAI and used inside CaringDictate, achieves 96-97% accuracy on clear English speech without any voice training. It matches or exceeds Apple Dictation, Google Dictation, and the older Dragon engines for general dictation. It does this without training because it was trained on a vastly larger and more varied speech corpus than Dragon ever was.
For a trained Dragon Professional user with a high-quality microphone, Dragon may still produce slightly higher accuracy on technical vocabulary. For everyone else — and especially for elderly users, users with non-standard accents, users with mild dysarthria, and users who simply do not want to spend hours on voice training — Whisper-based recognition is now the better practical choice. Plus the 30-day refund gives you a real test on your own voice with no risk.
Honest recommendation
If you have an existing Dragon Professional v16 license that works: there is no urgency to switch. Keep using it until it stops working or until Windows changes break it. (We do think the day will come when Windows updates make Dragon v16 unstable — Microsoft has clearly deprioritized desktop Dragon.)
If you are looking for a new dictation tool in 2026: CaringDictate is what we would buy. It is the most reasonable choice for the elderly + medical conditions audience, and the price is set specifically so the comparison isn't close. The 30-day refund means trying it costs you nothing.
If you are an enterprise hospital clinician: Dragon Medical One is what your hospital probably licenses. CaringDictate is not built for that workflow.
